Halifax, Nova Scotia

I am happy to report I made today count.

I had a good and much needed sleep, got up, made myself presentable and did some research before I left so I wouldn’t be wandering aimlessly.

I decided to make my first stop at the Citadel National Historic Site. Now I’ve been avoiding museums and the like for this trip as I find it gives me a fishbowl feeling. Everything is….sterile. But I was intrigued by this place, and my discovery pass gives me free admission (and so does Carney for this summer for that matter) and all I had to pay for was the $8.50 parking. Done deal.

I wandered a bit before seeing a guided tour. I followed it a bit, and they demonstrated a rifle firing, and I asked if it was a live round or blank, and some old hag turns to me and says “really?!” when the tour guide says they are blanks. Now, I have always been taught that there are no stupid questions, and I’ll admit this wasn’t my brightest moment, but if there is a question you think is stupid, you keep your mouth shut. This old bitty used her outside voice instead, leaving a sour taste in my mouth, and I slowly separated myself from the group to wander on my own. You know when you do that thing when you replay the event but say what you wanted to say. Yeah, that’s what I was doing. I’m glad I ditched though, as I made some great images and again, museums are generally dull, tours are boring, and I couldn’t hear the guide well at all.

I had heard they were going to fire a canon firing at noon, so I wanted to stick around for that at least and I got a video of it. No…I didn’t ask anyone if it was a live round.

I had dressed improperly for the task at hand again and without a hat and it being very hot I had to go back to the motel to get it. I was not going to burn my skull to the point where it would peel like a hard-boiled egg again, like in Sault St. Marie. Well, I did anyway, as I found out later. I’m currently a cherry tomato writing this.

I headed for downtown and got a parking space that was, I would find out later when walking back, only a few blocks from yesterday’s spot. Now I had been to the waterfront already but that was where I wanted to focus my attention as there was a lot of action there and a lot to see.

It was hot but pleasant and the hat really made a difference… go figure.

I photographed the locals, had a lobster roll, and got some serious steps in over the course of two hours. I even got a compliment on my look/outfit by a passerby which got caught on my Ray-Ban Metas as I happen to have been recording some video.

Halifax is a beautiful city and has been one of my favourite stops so far. I would consider flying back for an event, 100%

Afterwards I got some groceries. This time I went to Walmart and stretched my dollar way more. I also tried once again to clean the red dirt stain on my tires. This time with a foam brush but it didn’t work. There’s some interesting soil in Ontario with a reddish hue that has stained my tires. Hopefully when I get it professionally detailed in Calgary, they manage to scrub it off.

I have some long drives ahead of me. While I want to stop in Fredericton, I think it might be smarter to put that day’s funds into Quebec City and successive stops towards home. I also told my Uncle that I would be in by Saturday, which is already going to be hard with an eight-and-a-half-hour drive from Quebec City on that day. I have a better chance of seeing everyone at once on a weekend and I don’t know if staying a whole other week there is a good idea.

Now it’s time to pack. I’ve already showered, and I plan to get up early so I can hit the road and put in those clicks.
